To quote an ancient proverb, given as fatherly instruction, “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will guard you.” (Proverbs 4:6, BSB) Wisdom does not come cheap. There is a cost to acquire it. Too often, though, many are not willing to pay the price. Unfortunately, because of that decision, foolish whims and desires can bring the results of severe consequences and regrets.
I remember, when I was a little girl, we would visit my grandmother, who lived in Charleston, SC. Grandma always had Oreo cookies in her cookie jar. They were my favorite. One day I spent the entire day sneaking into the cookie jar to indulge in this tasty snack. My childlike mind tried to be cunning so that I would not get caught. Each time I reached for a cookie, I would only open the cake part and help myself to the cream in the middle. Putting the pieces back together, I smugly thought to myself, “No one will ever know.” To my surprise, I learned that day that I could not outfox my grandma. She knew who the culprit was, and she knew how to administer the proper punishment to fit the crime.
Though this may be a funny childhood memory, there is a profound moral to the story. And, no, it is not to not get caught with your hand in the cookie jar. (LOL!) Wisdom came at a high price that day. I learned it was best to not follow through with foolish, childish desires. As an adult, I am learning to put childish ways behind as I walk in the wisdom of many lessons learned in life.
When walking in wisdom, we are guarded from making foolish decisions. Though we may feel denied pleasure for the moment, we will benefit from the preservation of harsh results. So, be wise. It suits you. Let’s keep growing and going. Stand firm. It’s a good time to be you!
