Everybody wants to rule the world, but no one wants to rule themselves. It is so easy to tell others what they need to do to be successful, be healthy, or be happy. But do you follow your own advice? Do you practice what you preach? Self-discipline is the key to living your words out loud.
Discipline is not the same as punishment. Punishment is the consequence for doing something we ought not to do. Discipline is the reward for refraining and doing the right thing instead. Although punishment is easier to come by than discipline, self-discipline is necessary when reaching goals. There will be times when you will not want to keep going. You may even quit and deal with feelings of guilt. However, every dream and goal in life comes with challenges. They are not meant to stop us but to prepare us to live those dreams. Embracing challenges forms our character, increases our stamina, and makes us stronger mentally and emotionally.
When I was training for the Marine Corps Marathon, I worked a job that had early morning hours. My longer runs took place in the summertime, as the race was in the fall. Charleston summers are submerged in tropical humidity, and the heat is no joke. In order to train properly, I would wake up early in the morning and hit the pavement by 4:00 a.m. I have to admit, there were times when I did not want to wake up to the alarm. No one would know anyway. However, missing too many runs could set me back, leaving me poorly prepared for the big day. That period in my life taught me the discipline I intentionally practice today. Though it is not easy, it is rewarding.
There is no better time than the present to begin practicing self-discipline. When you learn to rule yourself, you will qualify to lead the part of the world where you have been planted. It all begins within. Your labors will not be in vain. Stand firm. It’s a good time to be you!
