Respect (The Virtue Series)

No one appreciates being disrespected. This is one thing that I hear often from others, old and young alike, who vehemently report that another has disrespected them. Yet, despite our dislike of this ill treatment, too often we find ourselves participating in its actions. What can we do to change that?

Respect, also known as esteem, has been defined as a positive feeling or deferential action shown towards someone or something considered important or held in high esteem or regard. It conveys a sense of admiration for good or valuable qualities. It is also the process of honoring someone by exhibiting care, concern, or consideration for their needs or feelings.

Another way to define this idea is to follow what we call the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In other words, treat others the way you would like to be treated. This idea is not meant to be shown only to people you think are important. But, it is intended to be extended to all.

The way to be respectful is, first, to respect yourself. Since you treat others the way you treat yourself, you must first take a look inward. Make sure that your view of you is a healthy one. Though you are still a work in progress, many times you can be your worst enemy, despising your flaws. This does not mean to make excuses for your shortcomings or the shortcomings of others. Instead, show yourself some grace as you intentionally grow forward and beyond that which can be strengthened. Your character will transform immensely as you make the change within. Many times, you may respect a position of authority yet not like the way in which it is being managed. By showing respect towards the powers that be, you can look for ways to get along or participate in making things better.

Seeing ourselves in a more positive light will allow us to also see others in the same manner. Respect is something we all need. To be treated respectfully will empower us to grow past what limits us. It fosters a sense of belonging and reduces misunderstandings which lead to conflicts. Self-esteem and personal growth will be enhanced while creating a positive atmosphere of inclusion.
