Laugh at the Days to Come!

I love an ancient Proverb that encourages us to be wise and prepared by keeping our personal life and house in order so that we can, “…laugh at the days to come.” This may be your first time hearing that quote so you wonder what that even means. How can you laugh in the face of adversity, opposition or even disaster? Preparedness is the key.

A few weeks ago my husband and I invested in a generator for our country farmhouse. We did so, like many, with the intent that we could still be up and running should we lose power. My husband did his research to see which brand and make would meet our property needs. We invested in one that could run on gas, propane and natural gas. We felt so wise with our choice, especially when we discovered that it was hard to get. We searched online for locations that carried this model. It was very difficult to find. However, we conquered, having found one that was over an hour away from our location. We called the store to see if they would hold it for us, due to the fact that there literally was only one left. Once we got it, we patted ourselves on the back for not giving up on this endeavor and getting what we went after.

The generator has remained on our porch in its box since then. We discovered that although it appeared our house was wired and ready for such a piece of equipment, in fact, it was not. There was still wiring and special work that needed to be done. So, we put it on our list of things to do, never thinking that we could use it sooner rather than later.

As the tropical storm that was generated from Hurricane Helene approached, we did not think the outcome would be what we experienced. Other recent storms came through with no damage at all. However, being caught off guard though much fair warning was given, we woke up that eventful morning without electricity in our home and a capable generator boxed on our porch. Wow, talk about a lesson learned. I believe it goes without saying, we were not laughing. (LOL!)

It’s not enough to prepare halfway. It is wise to carry out all that is required so that you can truly laugh at the days to come. Be ready so that when unplanned events happen you can not only keep things going for you and your family, but also for your neighbors and friends as well. This is what community is all about – being there for each other.

Be encouraged as you take inventory of what you have and what you need. Plan now so that you are ready for the unforeseen. Take nothing for granted. Follow through with your planning and do not be satisfied with going halfway to your goal. By doing so, you will be able to, “…laugh at the days to come.” Shine bright. It’s a good time to be you!
