“While I breathe, I hope” is South Carolina’s state motto. Being a South Carolinian and encourager, this quote is empowering for me. It speaks to that nature inside of me that desires never to give up or quit. However, being human, I must admit there are times when the waiting causes my heart to hurt and mind to wonder. In those times, I am reminded of an ancient Proverb that states, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12, NIV)
I recall a time when my first grandchild was born. The news of his arrival brought excitement to my soul, though the situation was intense. Because of the strained relationship between the parents, stepping into grandparenthood was like stepping on eggshells with hearts breaking and relationships ending. During that time my husband and I fought hard through labors of love to maintain the roles that we saw as an honored gift of Poppi and Mimi. With each methodical endeavor, we made it very clear that no matter what happened we would always be in a cherished relationship with our grandson.
One day while driving to the bank to make a deposit, I was having a strong conversation with God about this situation. My heart was heavy and troubled. Being a believer, I knew my only hope in this situation was to cling to Who and what I believed. As I drove up to the bank teller, I placed my deposit in the tube and sent it on. Waiting for its return, I maintained silence in my car and continued to quietly reflect upon my thoughts and concerns. When the tube returned, I opened it up to an astonishing surprise. Imagine my reaction when I saw on the receipt a handwritten note that said, “Never Give Up!”
But, that’s not the end of the story. As I drove out of the bank, I received a phone call from my grandson’s other grandmother. She acknowledged my grief and pain in the situation and shared an ingenious solution that would prove to be time-worthy and effective even to this day – 10 years later. This solution brought healing, restoration and life to the relationship that truly mattered most, grandparents and grandchild. And, we continue to grow strong with each passing day.
I encourage you today, as long as you are breathing hang on to hope. Never give up! Whatever it is that you are waiting for, do not let your heart be sick. You will make it. You will obtain it. You will live it. And, you will enjoy the life it brings. Live today as if it were the day. Just believe and stand firm. It’s a good time to be you!
Peace and Joy,
