“Do you have fear?” These were the words I heard my Guatemalan guide ask me as we were quickly trying, before the sun set, to get down the monstrous volcano we had climbed. We did not want to be on the mountain in the dark.
“Do you have fear?” My first thoughts were, “Why is he asking me that? And how should I respond?” Being the one who was there to mentor him, I did not want to appear that I was afraid, incapable or unwilling to take on whatever challenge was behind that question. So, I spoke up and replied, “No.”
“Then let’s JUMP!” What? There beside us on the mountain was a deep chasm. When you looked down all you could see was darkness. On the other side was volcanic ash. His plan was that we jump over to the other side of this abyss and slide down the mountain to save time. Again, we did not want to be on the mountain when the sun set.
Immediately, he jumped and motioned for me to do the same. I knew at that moment two things could happen; I would make it or fall to my death. I was scared to jump, and I was scared not to. My guide was already on the other side. I needed him to continue my descent of the mountain. So, taking a few steps back with my eyes shut, I ran, making a giant leap over what seemed to be an endless, sustaining chasm. Landing on my feet, I rejoiced with him that I made it!
You may be facing something that seems like a huge risk. However, this is the time to take the giant leap of faith. Though you feel your heart beating out of your chest – Go ahead! JUMP! Though you may hear many voices of all the worst things that could happen – Go ahead! JUMP!
I recently read a quote that says, “Don’t be afraid to take a big step if one is indicated. You can’t cross a chasm in two small jumps.” So, go for it! Don’t be afraid of what you have to lose. Be challenged by what you could gain. Be brave. It’s a good time to be you!
Peace and Joy,
