Freedom is a state of being. The idea can also mean free of restraint, physically and mentally. A person who is free can accomplish many things and live their wildest dreams. Their drive is not determined by what other people think or believe. They have a deep motivation within that calls them to experience life to the fullest and be themselves without anyone else’s permission.
I remember growing up I was the sibling who was shy and bashful. I did not like being in front of people. I would feel faint before performances such as plays or recitals. Being a nervous wreck is wording it mildly. My younger sister, on the other hand, was witty, funny, and a social butterfly. She wanted to be with people and could put on a show with the best of them.
As we grew older, our personalities began to change. Our mom would say it was as if we switched with each other. My sister began to feel more comfortable being an introvert as I burst my way out of the cocoon of timidity and found myself on world stages.
Today, my sister carries her doctorate degree in counseling with her own practice and is a college professor who recently received a promotion as the program director. Me? Well, I travel the world, love meeting people and learning about their cultures, teach in school, author books and curriculum, and coach leadership teams.
The switch that my mom refers to was actually a sense of recognized freedom. As we grew into our own unique designs, we became free to be. Those earlier years were not wasted moments. They were the cocoon that helped form us.
As a caterpillar enters the cocoon, transformation into a butterfly runs its course. However, in order to spread its wings and fly, the beautiful insect has to break free on its own. It cannot rely on the help of others, or its wings become damaged and it dies.
Breaking free from an imprisoned mindset solely depends on you. And, once you are free, you will truly be. Take advantage of your freedom and fly. Let’s keep growing and going. It’s a good time to be you!
