Disappointment

Wow, have you ever been there, felt that? Defined, disappointment is sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations. A historical figure, King Solomon, explained it like this, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” Does that sound familiar? Disappointment is something that we all experience in life. Believe it or not, it can be a positive rather than a negative.

Disappointment proves that you are passionate about something. Even though your expectations overly exceeded the reality of the outcome, it shows that you were brave enough to believe and show up for something.

Disappointment can also provide an opportunity for growth. The key here is to get back up and try again. You can adjust your expectations and evaluate the goals that you have set. You can tailor your decisions to avoid this particular kind of disappointment again.

Experiencing disappointment has the potential to make you stronger. It empowers you to bounce back and become more resilient. Some benefits of facing this adversity are greater mental fortitude, increased emotional intelligence, clearer thinking, and stronger stance against negative thinking.

Some ways to deal with disappoint include:

  1. Let it out. – Share it with someone you trust who will listen to you and give you another perspective.
  2. Know yourself. – Do not allow disappointment to derail how you view yourself. Accept yourself. Breathe in and breathe out. Like breath, disappointment comes and goes.
  3. Don’t brood over it. – The worst thing you can do is to allow resentment to settle in your heart and mind.

You do not have to react negatively to disappointment. It does not have to define your moments of challenge. There is always a silver lining. Experiencing disappointment means that you are living life. It could also mean you are right where you need to be, learning what you need to learn. Sir Winston Churchill once said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” Give yourself some time to come to terms with your circumstances, catch your second wind, then begin again.

Let’s keep growing and going.  It’s a good time to be you!

Peace and Joy,

Angela
