Courage vs. Cowardice

“If I were King of the forest……” These are the words to the famous song of the Cowardly Lion in the movie classic, The Wizard of Oz.  How sad it is to see a majestic beast give in to the intimidation of fearful imaginations.  His quest to see the Wizard was driven by his desire to receive courage from the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.

Once arriving and bowing in the presence of this mysterious ruler after enduring a series of unfortunate events, we discover in the plot that all he needed to be brave was a medal.  This was a token of heroism that he could proudly wear to remind himself of who he truly was.  What was given to him he did not even earn or win.  It was used of all things.

In life, we may find ourselves hiding behind vain imaginations.  These are things that we waste our time on thinking to be true or scenarios that we create in our minds based on fear factors.  They are vain because they are self-absorbent and have no foundational truth.  These are variables that will rob us of our courage.  You see, if fear were not a factor in our situations, we would have no need for courage.  It would not be necessary.  We would all just go dancing through the tulips without a care in the world.

Fear will most likely always be present creating a powerful force to be reckoned with.  It is in those moments that you can proudly remember the badge or medal of courage that you wear.  “Where is it?”, you might ask.  You can find it in the present truth that you are standing.  You have faced situations before that may have threatened your very existence, yet you are still standing.  You have overcome tragedy and trauma, yet you are still standing.  You have faced trails and testing, yet you are still standing.  Are you starting to get the picture?  You are still present and still standing.

What’s even greater is this strength and power to still stand is not something you can do on your own.  It doesn’t measure up in comparison to what came against you.  It was only through the One who enabled you to do all things (Philippians 4:13).  So, wear this badge of courage proudly.  Remember who you are and Whose you are.  With this confident courage you can always rule the forest of fears that try to overwhelm you.  Burn bright.  It’s a good time to be you!

Peace and Joy,

Angela
