Acceptance, psychologically speaking, is a person’s recognition and assent to the finality of a situation without attempting to change or protest it. There are some things that can be changed. And, there are some things that cannot be changed. As the Serenity Prayer inspires, may we have wisdom to know the difference.
Acceptance is also a vital part of human life necessities. We all need it. Too often we confuse acceptance with approval. You can accept and not approve. There is power in accepting yourself and others. The emotional impact it makes can be liberating from mindsets that limit us. First, it gives a sense of belonging. The assurance of always having a place to fit in enhances community. Second, acceptance elevates self-worth. You treat others the way you treat yourself. Accepting yourself opens a door to your heart to accept others as well, without feeling like you have to change them. That is not your job. But, acceptance is. Third, it provides emotional security. You can live without the fear of judgment from others. Fourth, it gives you inner peace. You are able to embrace your strengths and your weaknesses. By accepting your past, good and bad, you are able to move forward and avoid getting stuck in your mistakes. Tranquility can rise from the lessons learned. Finally, authentic self-expression can result from acceptance. Being free to share your thoughts, feelings, and views can be liberating.
In my childhood years, I always thought of myself as an oddity. Many times, I never felt like I fit in with those labeled as popular or confident. With that attitude, I took the feeling of rejection and used it as a defense to reject others. I would not allow people to get close to me for fear that they may not like the real me. However, once I learned to accept myself for who I was, I found myself open to receiving others. I saw everyone as valuable, even those who I allowed to intimidate me the most. Growing in confidence and being authentic allowed me to realize that what I offer to the world is something like no other. And, guess what! The same goes for you.
What can acceptance liberate you from? It can release you from self-doubt, fear of rejection, inner conflicts, and suppressed self-expression. In place of these attitudes, you can create a safe space for yourself and others. It helps you to be mindfully aware of what people around you may be feeling and not always stuck in self-criticism. Compassion can flow freely, empowering you to accept diversity. Not everyone is like you and that’s ok too.
Start today by practicing acceptance. Again, acceptance is not approval. If there are things you can change, then do so. However, if there are things you cannot, be wise. Learn to embrace them and flow in grace, mercy, and peace. Your outlook on life and view of yourself will be more positive and productive. Let’s keep growing and going. It’s a good time to be you!
